Sofer On Site Sofrim are highly qualified with many years of experience in evaluating all types and conditions of Torahs. Every Torah must be written accurately to be deemed kosher, and only a kosher scroll may be read publicly. Sometimes an error may be noticed in the Torah, but most often, it is simply normal usage and wear and tear that make it necessary to evaluate and verify if it is still kosher. Before a Torah can be restored, repaired or maintained, it must first be evaluated to determine its current condition. If a scroll is not Kosher, we will propose what steps are necessary to restore it; at what cost and the amount of time involved. Evaluating a Torah establishes a benchmark on the overall condition of the scroll and what work, if any, is necessary. Often, more than one option will be offered. The evaluation process takes about one hour per Sefer Torah to complete. After an evaluation we offer a written quote for its restoration. An evaluation is especially useful as a tool to set a long-term plan for the overall care of a Torah. Those involved in Torah care are strongly encouraged to come & watch while we are evaluating. They will come away with a whole new appreciation of their Torah as seen through the eyes of the Sofer. This then should be followed by a Holy Rollers training program. Due to the caustic and damaging nature of liquid/organic solvents, we at Sofer On Site use only non- invasive cleaning techniques. When we mention a scroll has been “previous liquid cleaned,” this indicates that there was previous use of these damaging organic solvents. Wherever we mention our intent to clean, this indicates non-invasive physical cleaning methods will be used. We thoroughly examine a scroll and consider all aspects of known Halachic problems in a Torah. These areas are inspected: Overall condition and any previous repairs Letters; their readability, intact, color and status Parchment; wholesomeness, cleanliness, durability Yeriot stitching; strength, attachment, & Matlesim Etzei Chaim/Poles: endurance, rolling quality and scroll support Aron Kodesh/Holy Ark condition under which the Torah is stored Following the scrolls examination, we present you with a detailed Torah Condition Report listing the scrolls current status, identifying problematic areas, which are broken down by the five books of the Torah, concluding with an estimated quote to restore. Further we will attempt and explain what caused the scroll to deteriorate. Evaluation quotes often include multi levels of repair options to consider when more than one level of repairs can be accomplished in a particular scroll. Please note: A standard Torah evaluation is not a examination by computer. Sofer On Site offers this service. Please see our Computer Torah Checking services.
