Examine Your Torah
Via Technology
The
advent
of
the
computer
age
has
been
a
helpmate
to
today’s
Sofer.
A
computer
check
can
identify
problems
in
the
specific
Mesorah
(traditions)
relating
to
the
formatting
of
words
in
a
Sefer
Torah,
as
well
as
letters
or
words
that
are
missing
or
unnecessary.
This
examination
process
does
not
replace
the
need
for
human
expertise,
but
it
is
a
tremendous
tool
for
the
industry,
and
demonstrates
a
way
of
how science, technology and Torah work together.
Sofer
On
Site
has
for
many
years
been
using
this
technology
to
assist
in
Torah
examination.
We
are
very
excited
to
be
able
to
provide
this
scanning
service
on
site
with
our
mobile
computer
lab
that
scans
and
analyzes
each
Torah.
Within
a
few
hours
you
will
have
the
results
without
having
to
send
your
Torahs away.
Whether
during
Torah
reading
,
examination
or
at
any
other
closer
look
at
the
script,
questions
arise
about
the
script
accuracy,
then
a
computer
checking
is
warranted.
Its
the
“Three
strikes
and
your
out”
policy:
should
more
then
three
accuracy
mistakes
be
found
in
a
Torah
scroll,
then
a
computer
examination of the entire scroll is required.
Please
note:
A
standard
eye
scanning
of
a
Torah
as
part
of
a
Torah
evaluation
does
not
examine
the
script
for
missing,
added
or
substituted
letters,
nor
does
it
verify
the
shapes
of
letters,
or
if
letters/words
are
written
too
close.
This
type
of
extensive
examination
can
only
be
accomplished
with
a
Computer
Checking
of
the
entire
scroll.
Sofer
On
Site
offers
this
service,
if
necessary,
only
on
a
special
request.
A
full
computer
checking
of
a
Torah
takes
about
8
hours
for
the
scanning,
plus
1-4
days of reviewing and analyzing the scanning report. Additional fees apply in providing this service.
Script
accuracy
problems
can
only
be
identified
and
verified
with
a
computer
scanning
of
the
entire
scroll.
However,
such
a
scanning
can
only
be
efficiently
accomplished
after
the
scroll
has
been
restored
(of
all
its
other
repair
needs,
otherwise
the
computer
scanning
will
pick
up
hundreds
if
not
thousands of mistakes which will take weeks to analyze).
You
may
request
a
computer
scanning
followed
by
an
examination
of
your
Torah
to
verify
its
condition
as
they
relate
to
the
issues
above.
We
will
be
glad
to
schedule
an
appointment
for
you.
There
are
extra
fees associated with performing a computer scan and checking.
