Torah Scroll Shipping Instructions Below are the shipping instructions for your Sefer Torah via UPS or FedEx. Method of Shipment: We recommend shipping overnight, since the less time in transit between locations the better. When shipping, it is best to ship Monday to arrive before the weekend. When shipping next day regular overnight delivery Mondays through Wednesdays. o If you ship it on Thursday, please make sure to have it delivered by Friday at noon. Costs & Weight: Shipping costs on items like this are figured by dimensional weight and not necessarily actual weight, it's best to ship the Torah in a box with the measurements of 48”x12”x12”. When shipping a Torah to Sofer On Site, be sure your Torah Scrolls are insured with an inland marine policy. When Sofer On Site initiates a prepaid shipping label, please be advised that we use a 3-day ground service shipping method and will only insur the Torah for $1,000 (to cover damage to poles). If a customer prefers quicker shipping or additional coverage, they may request this and the customer will pay the balance separately. Preparing for Shipment: The method for preparing a Torah for shipping is by way of “double wrapping” and therefore considered a “box in a box”. Before packing, please remove the Torah cover (mantel) – it does not need to be included. Keep the Torah belt* on scroll to secure the Torah during shipping or use another method of your choice as long as the Torah is rolled firmly. If removing the proles before shipping: o Roll the scroll to one end and secure the scroll in its place. o There are traditionally three stitching attaching the poles to the scroll. With a sharp blade, gently slit the sinew (Torah thread) – not over the parchment but over the wood. o Repeat the same to all three stitching. o Then remove the threads – now the scroll is separated from the poles. o Roll the scroll to the other end and repeat the as above. o Keep the sinew (threads) and place in an envelope or bag and send with the Torah so they can be buried as Shaimos (ritual way for burying holy objects) Then wrap your scroll in a tallit*. Place the scroll completely inside a plastic bag and seal it to protect it against any water. Wrap the scroll now with Bubble Wrap® plastic, completely and firmly all around it. Use more Bubble Wrap® around the top and bottom of the poles and between the interlocking plates, for extra security (unless you are removing the poles before shipping). Now place your scroll in a good, solid cardboard box (preferred size listed above) and fill with Polystyrene packing peanuts. Seal the top and bottom of the box. You are ready to ship your Torah. Please label or write on the box “Fragile” or “Do Not Drop” or “Handle with care”. Tracking: When making the shipping label always select the tracking option. Once you ship it, please send Sofer On Site the tracking number so we can keep an eye open for it. *All items shipped to our workshop are tagged upon arrival and returned to you when the scroll is returned. Safe travels for your Torah
